In the Blink of an Eye – Tale of the Tiny Squirrel

In the blink of an eye, he was gone.

Just like that, taking his last little breath.

Such a special little creature.

A sweet and lovely, bouncing and playful,

tiny, baby squirrel.

We shall miss you, my little friend.

The joy you brought to our home was endless,

just like your energy and enthusiasm for life.

Goodbye for now, little Dexter.

Climb the trees and eat avocados, bananas and almonds.

Be with your mother and your brother, Felix.

Be free, my little pal.   Be free, until we meet again.

Little Buddies – A Day in the Life of a Squirrel

“Oh, Good Lord. Not another one!” I stumbled out of bed to look at the small creature that my daughter had brought inside.  She had a habit of bringing every small, furry creature inside to me if it needed tending to.  We had nursed multiple motherless bunnies back to health and attempted a squirrel once.  That one had been unsuccessful, however, since it was already gimpy when we’d gotten it.  We had tried so hard.  What was this going to be?  God only knew.

“Mom, seriously, it’s two baby squirrels and their mom had her head torn off by a dog.  This is serious!  You need to help me.  You know what to do.  You’re their only hope.” She pleaded with me with her beautiful green eyes.  I could never say no to those eyes. Damn it.  She always got me with those eyes and the pleading.  And how then could I say no.  This story was too sad for even me.

I looked into her hands which held the box.  Within it, there were two baby squirrels.  Babies.  Not as young, thankfully, as the previous squirrel, which had consumed our time and energy for two months, but non the less, they were infants.  They had their eyes opened and had all their fur.  Their tails had some fur but very little.  Oh my goodness, but they were so darn cute!

As we checked each one over, we discovered they were brothers.  One was definitely sick.  He was smaller than the other.  He was weaker.  My daughter was scared and sad, but had faith in my abilities to heal and protect these little buddies from whatever was troubling them.  I, on the other hand, was less trusting in my abilities.

We named the tiny squirrel buddies Felix and Dexter.  Felix was the sickly one and we unfortunately did lose him.  Dexter, however, thrived.  Then, one day, Dexter became very ill.  My daughter discovered that he had a very common problem that is caused by a lack of calcium in young squirrels.  It’s called MBD, Metabolic Bone Disease.  She searched the internet for the information.  I searched the internet for remedies.  We were able to nurse this baby back to health.

Today, Dexter is a young, teenager.  He continues to thrive, but can not be released into the wild as we had planned.  He is fearless.  We had other pets and Dexter isn’t afraid of them.  When he is out of his cage, someone always has to be there to monitor the situation.  He is completely comfortable around the cats and dogs that would love to eat him.  Not a good plan if he was an “outside” squirrel.  This was not our plan.  We still give him calcium if he becomes lethargic.  He seems to need it less and less.  Thank God!

Dexter loves to use us a springboard or a perching spot.  He likes to sit on my head or my shoulder.  His favorite food is avocado.  It’s a treat but so is fruit.  He lives on specialized squirrel food.  Yes, there is such a thing. He lives on produce and loves lettuce, cauliflower, cabbage, his formula (still), and anything else we give him. He loves fruit and nuts, especially almonds.

With Dexter around, I’ve discovered what is good for squirrels and what’s not.  I know he prefers not to be outside sitting in the grass.  He’s afraid of it.  He loves to climb, anything!  If there is a flat surface, he’s there.  He’s used the dog and the cat as springboards too to get from one place to another.  Their reactions were that of “What was that?”

Life is crazy around here.  I never know what my daughter will bring home next.  We are animal lovers and we have big hearts.  We are rehabbers and most of the time we can let them go.  This little guy, however, it looks as if he’s here to stay.  I never thought I’d have a pet squirrel.  What is wrong with this picture?  I guess nothing.  It’s just who we are.  God chose us to have a zoo full of little buddies.  A very unique zoo, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Vision of Colors to a Blind Man

Drawn by my daughter, Katie, age 11 at the time.

Seeing through your eyes, what a joy to see such clarity.

The leaves on the trees, the petals on the flowers,

Such beauty that surrounds you brings me levity.

Each blade of grass, each feather on the birds.

My soul soars to such heights.

I yearn for a day when my eyes could see like yours,

Yet only in my mind can I see those lights.

My sight is lost, my time has gone,

My eyes have long since faded.

But thanks to your, your words bring back

Those colors and clarity and the pain is alleviated.

The Adoption

Bone of my bone, blood of my blood.

Does it matter if you are or not.

To me, you are my child,

Whether your skin is like mine, or like somebody else’s.

To me, you will still be my child.

A woman gave you life, then she gave you the greatest gift.

She gave you a life she couldn’t give you.

She was bone of your bone. She was blood of your blood.

She was your first mother. She heard your first cry.

I will wipe all your tears. I will kiss away your fears.

She and I will love you forever and a day.

You are a special child.  You have been blessed.

You have been wanted before you were born.

Your mothers will love you, one in her heart only,

But I get to hold you.  Say a prayer for us both everyday.

You are our child, but it took two of us to mold you.

You are blessed child.  You were adopted and are so loved.

Home light

Reaching down to kiss the little face that peered back at her,

She gently held his hand

She knew these moments were so fleeting,

that time would not stand still.

She would take another glance at him just to memorize his face.

Tomorrow he would be different still

because that’s what time did to all.

It changes us. It changes them.  Then, one day we all are gone.

So just for now as she kissed him goodnight,

She’d remember now.  His look.  His sweet baby smell.

And when he was grown into a young man,

She’d keep the home light on.

He’d always have home.

She’d see to that.  He was her son, afterall.

Her stars and her moon.  Her sweet, little child.

No one could take that love away.

In the Shadows

Image result for shadows

In the shadows, your greatest fears lurk.

In the shadows, your deepest desires hide.

Your truest self hides in those shadows.

The mask of happiness for all to see is worn for those while the sun shines.

The mask that all is great will remain in place, a mask of light and joy.

Believe in yourself so the shadows can fade.

Let the shadows be no longer true.

Be the sun and the brightness.

Be the joy and the light.

But don’t let the shadows know.

Don’t let them see.

Fresh New Hope

Image result for parties with streamers for graduation

Once a tiny babe held in our arms,

Now all grown up and so full of charms.

Graduation day is soon to be here,

A time for joy, celebration and cheer.

Fresh new hope for future endeavors

To be all you can and be oh so clever.

Fresh new hope for all of the dreamers,

But for now, let’s have parties with all of the streamers!

Standing in the shadows, her tears flowed gently down her cheeks.

She was alone.

She didn’t want anyone to see the tears, as though somehow it made her weak.

She was strong.

Her mother had just taken her last breath after fighting for weeks.

Her lovely mom.

She felt so abandoned by the world.

Alone and abandoned.

Stairway to Heal

Teresa-pink-rose-web In the still of the night, not a sound to be heard.

She lay in the bed like a frail little bird.

This was the night she would breath her last breath.

Her daughter by her side to hold her hand at her death.

The daughter’s love was so pure, like it was as a babe.

Now the girl wished and prayed that her mother could be saved.

But she knew God well and she knew it was mom’s time

For the end of her journey and her life was sublime.

The stairway to heaven must be paved with gold

The daughter believed this as she had been told.

A stairway filled with music and angels is what mother deserved.

The daughter thought of each moment and treasures preserved.

As mother took her last breath the daughter did weep

But tears of love and joy were those she did seek.

Time passed by and the daughter grew stronger.

Her stairway of grieving was a stairway no longer.

She met each new day with a smile on her face.

Her journey of healing at last had it’s own place.

It was a memory now, still painful and yet

She could find her joy in life again and the pain she could forget.
